What is the “Warrior” Gene?

The “warrior” gene refers to a specific variant in the in the MAOA gene. This gene is tied to aggressive behavior and risk-taking tendencies.

What is monoamine oxidase A (MAOA)?

MAOA stands for monoamine oxidase A, which is an enzyme our body creates using instructions from the MAOA gene. This enzyme’s main job is to break down certain neurotransmitters – chemicals like dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine. These chemicals are essential for feelings of pleasure, reward, and how we react to stress.

Variants of the MAOA Gene

Some variations of the MAOA gene produce less of the monoamine oxidase A enzyme. When this enzyme is in short supply, the neurotransmitters mentioned aren’t broken down as they should be. As a result, people with this “warrior” gene variant, also called the MAOA-L form, might show heightened levels of aggression, impulsiveness, and a tendency to take risks.

Warrior Gene

The Genetics

The MAOA gene is located on the X-chromosome. Since men possess only one X chromosome, they inherit a single version of the MAOA gene. If this is the “warrior” variant, its traits might be more pronounced in their behaviour.
Women carry two X chromosomes, meaning they can inherit two distinct variants of the MAOA gene. This means that even if one is the “warrior” gene, the other could be the regular type, potentially counteracting some of the “warrior” gene’s effects. However, the exact effects in women are still being studied.

Variants Identified in this Test

The MAOA gene can vary in its structure with segments that can be repeated 2, 3, 3.5, 4, or 5 times. The number of repeats determines how much enzyme is produced, and can be categorized into two forms:

  • MAOA-H allele: People with 3.5 or 4 repeats belong to this category, producing higher levels of the monoamine oxidase A enzyme.
  • MAOA-L allele (the “warrior” gene): Those with 2, 3, or 5 repeats fall here. They produce less of the enzyme, linking them to the characteristics typically associated with the “warrior” gene.

A simple DNA test can determine a man’s MAOA gene version and the two possible versions for women. Knowing this can provide insights into potential genetic tendencies.

Characteristics Linked to the “Warrior” Gene

The “warrior” gene’s name comes from its tie to aggressive behavior. Research has also associated it with:

  • Antisocial behavior
  • Compulsive gambling
  • Alcoholism
  • Personality disorders
  • Violence, particularly in those with childhood abuse
  • Various psychological disorders like autism, depression, sleep issues, seizures, and panic disorders
  • Mental challenges (Brunner syndrome)
  • Sudden infant death syndrome

However, it’s not all negative. Some studies suggest that those carrying the “warrior” gene may make better business decisions, as they’re more inclined to take and benefit from financial risks.
