Description
About the Test

This DNA Cousin Test is an ideal method to determine the likelihood that individuals are first cousins when the parent(s) in question are unavailable for testing. The mouth swab can be collected quickly and discreetly in the comfort of your own home and sent to our lab for analysis. If the parent(s) in question are available for testing, the paternity or maternity test is always recommended. Our lab is internationally recognized and accredited by AABB, ISO17025, and CLIA, ensuring the highest standards of quality and accuracy.

Benefits
Technical Info

In a DNA cousin test, a buccal (mouth) swab is taken from each alleged cousin to collect cells containing unique DNA. In the lab, the DNA is extracted, amplified using PCR (polymerase chain reaction), and examined. The STR profiles of each alleged cousin are compared, and the DNA cousin test can determine the probability of a biological relationship.

FAQs

Here are the answers to the most frequently asked questions about this test.

If the alleged parent(s) in question is/are available for testing, we highly recommend the DNA Paternity Test or DNA Maternity Test over the DNA Cousin Test. If the parents of the alleged cousins are available, the DNA Sibling Test would be recommended over the DNA Cousin Test since the sibling test (although not as powerful as a parentage test) is more powerful than a cousin test. The DNA Cousin test should only be considered if absolutely no other test type can be taken as it is the least powerful of all of the available kinship tests. While the parentage tests will always provide absolutely conclusive results, the cousin test will only provide a likelihood that the individuals are first cousins versus not related at all.

If the participants live in different cities, you can split the kit and send the components to each party for sample collection. Each component has a barcode to ensure the samples are tested together when they arrive at the laboratory. Even if the samples are collected separately, they will still be tested together once they arrive at the laboratory.

Results are typically available within 1-2 business days after the samples are received at our lab. This quick turnaround time ensures you get the answers you need as soon as possible.
